Quick Answer

1 lakh = 100,000 = 1,00,000.

1 crore = 10,000,000 = 1,00,00,000.

After the first three digits from the right, Indian comma grouping usually continues in groups of two digits.

One lakh 1,00,000

Equals one hundred thousand.

One crore 1,00,00,000

Equals ten million or 100 lakh.

Grouping pattern 12,34,56,789

Three digits first, then pairs.

Indian Number System vs Devanagari Numerals

This page is about number names and digit grouping, not Devanagari digit symbols. Devanagari numerals are symbols such as ० १ २ ३ ४ ५ ६ ७ ८ ९. The Indian number system is about place values, lakh, crore, and comma grouping.

Indian vs International Number System

The international system groups digits in threes and uses names such as million and billion. The Indian number system uses lakh and crore after ten thousand. Lakh and crore are much more common than arab and kharab in everyday English usage.

Value International format Indian format Indian name International name
1,000 1,000 1,000 one thousand one thousand
10,000 10,000 10,000 ten thousand ten thousand
100,000 100,000 1,00,000 one lakh one hundred thousand
1,000,000 1,000,000 10,00,000 ten lakh one million
10,000,000 10,000,000 1,00,00,000 one crore ten million
100,000,000 100,000,000 10,00,00,000 ten crore one hundred million
1,000,000,000 1,000,000,000 1,00,00,00,000 one arab / one hundred crore one billion

Indian Comma Grouping Rule

Indian comma grouping starts like the international system: count three digits from the right. After that first group, continue grouping the remaining digits in pairs of two. That is why 123,456,789 becomes 12,34,56,789 in Indian format. The numeric value does not change. Only the comma placement changes so the number matches lakh and crore place values.

For smaller numbers, the Indian and international formats may look the same. 1,000 and 10,000 use the same comma placement in both systems. The visible difference starts at 100,000, which becomes 1,00,000, or one lakh. At 10,000,000, the Indian format is 1,00,00,000, or one crore. This is why learning lakh and crore together with comma grouping is easier than memorizing isolated examples.

The Indian system is especially common in prices, salaries, real estate, population figures, business reporting, and everyday financial conversation in India and nearby South Asian contexts. A person may say 25 lakh instead of 2.5 million, or 3 crore instead of 30 million. When writing for an international audience, it is often helpful to show both forms: for example, 1 crore equals 10 million.

A practical way to learn the pattern is to mark the right side first. In 123456789, separate the last three digits as 789. The remaining part is 123456. Now divide that remaining part into pairs from the right: 12, 34, and 56. Join the groups back together and the answer is 12,34,56,789. Once you see that rhythm, numbers such as 25,00,000 and 3,50,00,000 become much easier to read.

The naming also follows the grouped structure. The group before thousand is lakh, and the group before lakh is crore. So 12,34,56,789 is read as twelve crore, thirty-four lakh, fifty-six thousand, seven hundred eighty-nine. This does not mean the number has a different value from the international form. It is still 123,456,789; the Indian system simply organizes and names the same value differently.

Do not confuse Indian grouping with Devanagari digits. The number 1,23,456 uses Indian comma grouping with Western digits. The form १,२३,४५६ uses the same grouping with Devanagari digit symbols. The grouping system and the digit symbols can be combined, but they answer different questions.

Indian Number System and Money

The Indian number system is commonly used with rupees and financial amounts. This section explains the notation only; it is not a currency converter.

Rupee amounts written with Indian number names
Amount Reading
₹1,00,000 one lakh rupees
₹10,00,000 ten lakh rupees
₹1,00,00,000 one crore rupees

Indian Grouping with Devanagari Digits

Indian grouping can be shown with Western digits or Devanagari digits. For example, 1,23,456 can be written as १,२३,४५६. Similarly, 1,00,000 becomes १,००,०००, and 1,00,00,000 becomes १,००,००,०००.

Devanagari digits are symbol shapes. Indian grouping is comma placement and naming. They can be used together, but they are not the same thing. See the Devanagari numerals guide for the digit symbols.

Common Mistakes with the Indian Number System

Thinking 1 lakh means 1 million

1 lakh is 100,000. 10 lakh is 1 million.

Writing 1 crore as 1,000,000

1 crore is 10,000,000, not one million.

Using international commas in an Indian-format answer

10000000 can be 10,000,000 internationally or 1,00,00,000 in Indian grouping.

Confusing Devanagari numerals with Indian grouping

१२३४५६ uses Devanagari digits. 1,23,456 uses Indian comma grouping.

Overusing arab and kharab

Lakh and crore are common in everyday English contexts. Arab and kharab are less common and should be explained when used.
