How to Write Fractions in Words

A fraction has two jobs for words to describe. The numerator, written above the bar, tells how many parts are being counted. It uses an ordinary cardinal number such as one, two, or eleven. The denominator, written below the bar, tells the size of each equal part. It uses a fraction name based on an ordinal number, such as third, fifth, or twelfth. Put those pieces together and 3/5 becomes three fifths.

Singular and Plural Denominator Names

The numerator controls whether the denominator name is singular or plural. A numerator of one uses the singular: 1/3 is one third and 1/8 is one eighth. Other numerators normally use the plural: 2/3 is two thirds and 7/8 is seven eighths. Two common names change noticeably: 1/2 is one half, but 3/2 is three halves. Fractions with denominator four are commonly read with quarter or quarters.

Proper, Improper, and Mixed Fractions

A proper fraction has a numerator smaller than its denominator, so its value is below one. An improper fraction has a numerator at least as large as its denominator. It can still be read directly: 7/3 is seven thirds. A mixed number separates complete wholes from the remaining fraction. The same value becomes 2 1/3, written two and one third. The word and connects the whole-number part to the fractional part.

Why Simplest Form Matters

Equivalent fractions can use different numerators and denominators while representing the same quantity. For example, 2/4 is two quarters, and it simplifies to 1/2, one half. Simplification divides both components by their greatest common divisor. The wording of the entered fraction is still valid, so this tool preserves it and shows the reduced result separately.

Fractions, Decimals, and Percentages

The fraction bar means division. Dividing the numerator by the denominator gives the decimal form; multiplying the decimal by 100 gives the percentage. Some fractions terminate, such as 3/4 = 0.75 = 75%. Others repeat, such as 1/3 = 0.333… . Seeing all three forms helps connect spoken language, exact notation, and numerical size without treating a rounded decimal as an exact replacement.

Common Writing Mistakes

Do not read both components as cardinal numbers: 3/5 is not “three five.” Do not keep a singular denominator after a numerator greater than one. Keep the denominator positive, and never use zero below the fraction bar. For mixed numbers, write the whole number first and use and before the fractional part. These small grammar rules make fraction wording clear in schoolwork, recipes, measurements, and everyday explanations.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you write a fraction in words?

Write the numerator as a cardinal number and the denominator as an ordinal fraction name. For example, 3/5 is three fifths.

When is the denominator singular?

Use a singular denominator when the numerator is exactly one, as in one third. Use the plural for other numerators, as in two thirds.

How do you write 1/2 in words?

The fraction 1/2 is written one half. The plural form is halves, as in three halves.

How do you write 3/4 in words?

The fraction 3/4 is usually written three quarters. Three fourths is also understandable, but quarters is the familiar everyday form.

How do you write a mixed number in words?

Write the whole number, then and, then the fraction. For example, 2 1/3 is two and one third.

Can an improper fraction be written in words?

Yes. Read it directly, such as seven thirds for 7/3, and optionally show its mixed-number equivalent.

Does the converter simplify fractions?

Yes. It preserves the entered fraction wording and also shows the greatest common divisor, simplest form, and mixed-number form.

Can the denominator be zero?

No. Division by zero is undefined, so a fraction with denominator zero is rejected.
